GSM stands for “grams per square metre.” It is the standard measure of how heavy or dense a fabric is — the higher the GSM, the more a given area of that fabric weighs. It’s one of the first specifications textile buyers ask for because it strongly influences a fabric’s thickness, opacity, warmth and durability.

How Is GSM Measured, and Why Does It Matter?

GSM is measured by cutting a fabric sample of a known area (often a standard round or square swatch) and weighing it precisely, then converting that weight to grams per square metre. Mills and testing labs use a dedicated GSM cutter and a lab balance to keep the measurement consistent and comparable across different fabrics and suppliers.

GSM matters because it’s a quick, objective proxy for how a fabric will feel and perform, even before touching it. A low-GSM cotton (roughly under 120 GSM) is typically light, breathable and semi-sheer — suited to summer wear, dupattas or lightweight linings. A mid-range GSM (around 120–200) covers most everyday shirting, kurta and dhoti fabric. Anything well above that (300 GSM and up) starts to describe heavier goods such as towelling, upholstery or winter-weight material. These ranges are general guidance, not fixed rules — the same GSM can feel different depending on the yarn, weave and finish.
