Why Saree Length Varies
The classic 5.5–6.5 metre range exists because different draping styles need different amounts of fabric. The common Nivi drape (the style most people picture) works comfortably at 5.5–6 metres. Regional drapes that wrap between the legs, like the Maharashtrian nauvari, need considerably more — often 8 to 9 metres. Taller wearers, or anyone wanting a fuller pallu (the decorative end draped over the shoulder), may also prefer the longer end of the range.
