Cotton and polyester are the two most common fabric fibres, and each has genuine strengths depending on what the fabric is for. Neither is universally “better” — it depends on your priorities.
How They Compare
- Breathability: cotton is more breathable and absorbs moisture; polyester traps more heat but wicks moisture away from the skin.
- Durability: polyester is more resistant to stretching, shrinking and abrasion; cotton wears out faster with heavy use.
- Care: cotton can shrink and wrinkle, often needing ironing; polyester holds its shape and resists wrinkling, and usually dries faster.
- Feel: cotton has a soft, natural feel against the skin; polyester can feel slightly synthetic, though modern blends narrow this gap.
