Printing adds colour and pattern to the surface of a fabric after it has been woven or knitted. Different printing methods suit different designs, budgets and order quantities.
Common Printing Methods
- Block printing: a hand-carved block is dipped in dye and pressed onto fabric. Traditional, slower, and gives a distinctive handcrafted look.
- Screen printing: dye is pushed through a mesh screen stencil onto the fabric. Good for bulk runs of a repeating pattern with a small number of colours.
- Digital printing: a printer applies dye directly onto fabric from a digital file, similar to inkjet printing on paper. Suited to complex, multi-colour designs and smaller order quantities.
